A Falling Leaf Heralds Autumn While All Beauties Gather in the Green Expo Garden

As it is written in the poem, the frost-covered leaves are redder than the flowers of the early spring. After the Frosts Descent, the colorful leaves dyed by the autumn come into the picture. When you promenade in the garden, you’ll be impressed by the golden foliage, or the scenery of flaming leaves covering the sky. Sometimes even the leaves grown on the same tree can present different colors. With the rendering of the clear sky and the warm sunlight, the whole place features with tranquility and dreamlike beauty.

Cotinus coggygria (the European smoketree)

As a typical plant in the Anacardiaceae family, Cotinus coggygria belongs to the genus of deciduous shrub or small arbor. You may never hear of its name, but in fact, it is a major component of the famous Xiangshan Red Leaf in Beijing. Therefore, in the Green Expo Garden, you may witness the beauty of Cotinus coggygria at its best season.

During the late autumn, the green oval leaves of Cotinus coggygria will turn red and yellow, becoming even more dazzling in the sunshine. Leaves hanging on the branches are dyed and fascinating.

Besides the yellow-leaf Cotinus coggygria in the garden, there are also red-leaf ones, which present red during the summer. After they bloom in spring, their peduncles hang on there for a long time like a cotton-like feather, thus a cloud-like landscape on the branches takes shape. Viewed from afar, it seems that countless silk gauze is twined around the trees. Therefore, it is also known as “Smoke Trees”.

Ginkgo

Ginkgo, also known as maidenhair tree, ginkgo biloba, etc., belongs to the deciduous tree genus of the Ginkgoaceae family. It is a unique tree species in China and is listed as a national first-class protected plant. Meanwhile, ginkgo is an ancient relict plant among all extant seed plants and is honored as the “Living Fossil”.

Autumn is the best season for ginkgo trees. As it arrives, the fan-shaped leaves experience a gradient from green to yellow until the whole tree is covered by golden leaves, which glow under the sunlight. When a breeze passes through, the light skips from one leaf to another, and finally land on the ground to embrace the nature.

Sapium sebiferum

Sapium sebiferum, commonly known as the Chinese tallow, is a sort of deciduous tree of the Euphorbia family while its diamond-shaped leaves show a special combined color of red and yellow in the autumn. Its fruits burst open on the branches and hang on there for a long time. Its fruits are favorite foods for the crow. Surrounded by pavilion, flower wall and rock, Sapium sebiferum are always used to reinforce dam, decorate the garden or the street.

Fraxinus chinensis

Fraxinus chinensis is a deciduous tree of the Oleaceae family. In the garden, it may be the earliest one to change its color. When the autumn arrives, its pinnate compound leaves turn golden yellow. Of course, in addition to the leaves, all its green samara turns yellow before they fall down with the wind. Because of its dioecious feature, only the pistillate plant can produce fruits. Fraxinus chinensis provides suitable living condition and foods for Ericerus pela Chavannes, a kind of insect, which will then produce white wax. The tree is straight so that people always plant it in the parks, gardens or on the streets.

Pistacia chinensis

Pistacia chinensis is a deciduous tree of the Rhizoma Coptidis family, and its trunk is flaky. After the Frosts Descent, its leaves can turn into yellow, orange, red and other colors. The colorful leaves will be more attractive with the background of the blue autumn sky. However, Pistacia chinensis is totally irrelevant to coptis chinensis because Coptis chinensis is the herbage of the Ranunculaceae family while Pistacia chinensis belongs to the Rhizoma Coptidis family. Both its flowers, fruits and leaves are beautiful, so it is widely planted in the city and scenic areas as shade tree, street tree and ornamental tree.

In addition to the above-mentioned leaf plants whose colors will change in the autumn, there are also pomegranate, crape myrtle, guelder-rose, the Chinese horse chestnut, etc., experiencing a gradual color change and decorating the season. When the pomegranate in Jinling Garden turns golden, the guelder-rose in Beijing Garden tints the whole mountain red. At the same time, the red leaves and fruits of crape myrtle and Lagerstroemia caudata can attract your attentions. We all know that the best season for Cerasus serrulata is spring, but you’ll never be disappointed when you see its leaves in the autumn. The micro golden rice fields in Yunnan Garden show us the picture of rice harvesting and also tell us the story about the harmonious and happy life in the countryside.

In the late autumn, it would be well if you walk out of your home and start the journey with your heart. Picking up some fallen leaves, you can savor the joy of autumn and understand the mysteries of life. Of course, as the temperature drops, please wear sweaters or wind coats when enjoying the autumn scenery!
