A total investment of RMB 96.49 billion in the protection and inheritance of the culture along the Zhengzhou section of the Grand Canal

The towns and areas that the Zhengzhou section of the Grand Canal flowed through covers Zhengzhou's Zhengdong New District, Zhengzhou High-tech Industrial Development Zone, Zhengzhou Economic and Technological Development  Zone, Huiji District, Jinshui District, Guancheng Hui District, Erqi District, Shangjie District, Gongyi City, Xingyang City and Zhongmu County, according to the director of the Zhengzhou Municipal Development and Reform Commission.

In the spatial layout of the Grand Canal, Henan's implementation plan puts forward the pattern of "two axes, three poles, seven areas", among which Zhengzhou has three components—the ancient city development axis along the Tongji Canal, the downtown area of Zhengzhou, and the Zhengzhou area of the Tongji Canal.

In the future, the Zhengzhou section of the Grand Canal will be built into a river of landscape, ecology and culture with contemporary characteristics and Zhengzhou features, and become a window to systematically show the world the "source of Chinese civilization, the soul of the Yellow River culture and the beauty of the Grand Canal culture".

What is the current status of the protection, inheritance, utilization of the culture along the core Zhengzhou section of the Grand Canal?

Guo Peijun, Deputy Director of Zhengzhou's Huiji Economic Development Zone Management Committee, said that Huiji District, as UNESCO World Heritage site Grand Canal's core section in Zhengzhou, has completed the urban design of the area within the Grand Canal cultural belt, and is consolidating the results and including them in the regulatory detailed planning. The provincial urban & rural planning and design institute is deepening and modifying the regulatory detailed planning of this area according to the opinions of experts and city leaders, while gradually carrying out the demolition and relocation work in the area.

In the protection of cultural heritage along the Grand Canal, Huiji District has established a coordination mechanism for the protection and inheritance of cultural relics along the Grand Canal featuring clearly defined power and responsibilities, and is striving to strictly review the construction projects in the monitored areas of the Grand Canal, and promote the protection of cultural heritage along the canal by grade and class.

To improve the quality of the ecological environment along the Grand Canal, Huiji District has done a good job in managing and protecting the Suoxu River system based on the river chief system. It also continues to carry out special rectification actions in addressing four kinds of behaviors detrimental to environmental protection on rivers and lakes and those in treating sewage, blocking sewage outfalls, cleaning sludge, and purifying water quality, and actively cooperates with the Zhengzhou Municipal Water Resources Bureau to finish the landscape improvement project for the Zhongzhou Avenue-Xiangyun Temple section of Suoxu River.
