The City God Temple of Zhengzhou has enjoyed a history of more than 600 years.

The City God plays a role like his name. He blesses and protects his people, distinguishes the good from the evil, and determines one’s life or death to manifest the retribution. The title originates from the city structure, in which the wall refers to “Cheng” and the moat refers to “Huang”. The central statue located in the main hall of City God Temple is the City God. The two sides of it are respectively placed with the Good-rewarding Official, Evil-punishing Official and soldiers including the Ox-headed Demon, Horse-faced Demon as well as the Black and White Impermanence. The City God Tour was a very lively event in the past, which would be regularly held at three seasons of spring, autumn and winter annually. The event held in spring was scheduled on the Tomb Sweeping Day, called “Arrest Ghosts”. In order to protect the people from the harm of ghosts, the City God would specially go out of the city to arrest the ghosts and imprison them in the city. The event held in autumn was scheduled on the 15th day of the 7th month of the lunar calendar, called “Visit the Ghost”. The City God would “accept the claim” in person, so as to redress cases involving injustice, false and wrong judgments, making the aggrieved devils have an earlier access to the reincarnation. The event held in winter was scheduled on the first day of October of the lunar calendar, called “Acquit the Ghost”. At the time, the faming was finished, thus, acquitting the ghosts to the outer world of the city for beguilement would not cause much harm. The City God was the illusory god. Afterwards, the people of him were deified. The City God of Zhengzhou is General of Han - Jixin, who deceives the Chu Army and saves the Han Emperor Liu Bang in the Chu–Han Contention. The City God Temple of Zhengzhou has preserved the main architectures including its front door, instrument door, theater stage, main hall, worship building and sleeping chamber.
