7.15 Million Tourists Received in Zhengzhou during the Spring Festival, Seeing a Resurgence in Its Cultural Tourism Consumption

During the Spring Festival of 2023, Zhengzhou Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television & Tourism systematically expanded the supply of cultural tourism products, thus improving the quality of cultural tourism services and ensuring a stable and orderly cultural tourism market. Besides, Zhengzhou was shortlisted among China's top 10 popular move-in places, witnessing a steady recovery in the cultural tourism market. According to the big data monitoring, sampling survey, and statistics at the district and county (city) level from the Zhengzhou Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television & Tourism, Zhengzhou received a total of 7.15 million tourists, growing 12.95% year-on-year, and realized total travel sales of RMB 4.639 billion, with a year-on-year increase of 5.79%.

A steady recovery in cultural tourism consumption

During the holiday, the cultural tourism authorities of Zhengzhou meticulously rolled out nearly 300 measures to benefit people and relevant activities, so as to help the city increase cultural tourism consumption steadily. Data from the administration showed that the city has held over 490 cultural tourism events and issued subsidies of RMB 21.0232 million to drive cultural tourism consumption, which attracted 992,400 participants and directly increased consumption by RMB 285 million.

Big data released by Ctrip indicated that the number of homestay reservations in Zhengzhou increased by 407% year-on-year and ticket bookings of scenic areas grew by 188% year-on-year during the Spring Festival. The WeChat red envelope cover for the Chinese New Year with Zhengzhou culture and tourism characteristics has been downloaded more than 70,000 times and used by nearly 120,000 people.

During the holiday, the 17 scenic areas under key monitoring in the city received 1,551,874 tourists, with a year-on-year increase of 56.45%, and the ticket revenue reached RMB 139,402,751, growing by 81.47% year-on-year. As popular scenic areas were visited, the occupancy rate of the accommodation industry soared. 70% of starred hotels in Zhengzhou have been rented on average, with a year-on-year increase of about 210%, according to statistics, and many starred hotels such as JW Marriott Hotel have been full for many consecutive days.

Significant increase in visitors from afar

Data statistics showed that 45.3% of the tourists were from Zhengzhou, 32.1% of them were from other cities in Henan Province, and 22.6% of them were from other provinces during the Spring Festival of 2023, rising from 7.5% in 2022. Among the tourists to popular scenic areas coming from other provinces, 37.1% visited Songshan Shaolin Scenic Area, 29.2% visited Unique Henan - Land of Dramas, and 27.6% visited Enjoy Land. According to the sampling survey, tourists to Zhengzhou mainly came from cities in Henan such as Kaifeng, Xinxiang, Zhoukou, Luoyang and Xuchang, and other provinces including Guangdong, Shandong, Beijing, Hebei, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Fujian, Liaoning, Shanghai and Shaanxi.

With the expansion of consumer groups and the influence of the temperature during the Spring Festival, the cultural tourism of Zhengzhou was featured with fast transportation and leisure sightseeing, hot cultural venues, and younger tourists. As monitored, self-driving tourists accounted for over 80% of the city's total tourists during the Spring Festival, and 88.06% of the tourists were individuals or accompanied by families, relatives, or friends.

Safe and stable cultural tourism market

Before the Spring Festival, the cultural tourism authorities of Zhengzhou conducted symposiums to discuss work safety and response measures for COVID-19 in the cultural tourism market during the holiday. The governments of all districts and counties (cities) worked with departments of emergency, cultural tourism, public security, transportation, market supervision, and so on to enhance market management and maintain an orderly market. During the holiday, the cultural tourism authorities strictly implemented the 24-hour duty work with leaders in charge, so as to ensure a safe and stable cultural tourism market with all efforts. As a result, the cultural tourism market of Zhengzhou went smoothly and orderly, with no tourism safety accidents or major tourism complaints.

Civilized tourism scenery

Before the Spring Festival holiday, Zhengzhou Tourism Association issued a notice to remind citizens and tourists to arrange their itineraries reasonably during the holiday, keep safety in mind, and travel in a civilized and safe manner. During the holiday, cultural tourism enterprises actively carried out activities with volunteer services in various forms to create a benign atmosphere for civilized tourism. They organized supervisors and volunteers to publicize civilized tourism and provide guidance, offering citizens and tourists services such as order maintenance, information consultation, voluntary explanation, and so on. Tourist routes, parking lots, and other prominent positions in scenic areas in Zhengzhou were equipped with administrators for inspections to ensure civilized and orderly tourism. Through electronic screens, publicity boards, radio, WeChat official accounts, and other platforms, these scenic areas publicized civilization in multiple dimensions and forms, so as to guide tourists to abide by public order and jointly build a good environment of civilized tourism.
