Perhaps most tourists are attracted by Henan Museum, so that few of them would like to visit Zhengzhou Museum on the Songshan Road.

Zhengzhou Museum, founded in July 1957, was originally situated at the Shrine for Martyrs of the Northern Expeditionary Army (founded in 1928) in the Bishagang Park, Jianshe Road East, Zhengzhou City. Since July 1, 2004, the basic exhibitions of Zhengzhou Museum have been opened to the public for free, making it China’s first free-of-charge museum in a provincial capital. In 2008, it was awarded “National First-grade Museum”.

It is the best choice to learn about the elegant bearing of the ancient capital of Zhengzhou.

Being built based on the bronze square tripod in the Shang Dynasty unearthed in Zhengzhou, which symbolizes standing firm on the Central Plain, and with its round saucer-shaped roof, Zhengzhou Museum is designed according to the philosophic concept of “round sky and square earth”.

Under the theme of “The Ancient Capital of Zhengzhou”, the basic exhibitions take Zhengzhou’s splendid bronze civilization in Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties as the main line to highlight Zhengzhou Shang City and Ancient Capital Complex, the unique and landmark historical & cultural heritage, and emphasize the distinctive characteristics of Zhengzhou in terms of the origin of Chinese civilization and the foundation of the country.

There are three exhibition areas of “Ode to Mountains and Rivers—Fertile Soil for Civilization”, “Ode to Zhengzhou Shang City — Capital of Emperor”, and “Charm of Zheng and Han States — Ancient Capital in the Spring and Autumn and the Warring States Periods”.

Walk around Zhengzhou Museum and imagine the city in ancient times, you may feel as if you traveled back in time.

Its cultural value lies in its collections of cultural relics, tablet inscriptions and rubbings, including the stone materials used to block up the river mouth of the Song Dynasty, the imperial tablet with the handwriting of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, the rubbing from a stone tablet recording the flood level in 1843, the tablet in memory of blocking up Huayuankou (Garden Mouth) in 1947, rocks and core samples of the key engineering projects of the Yellow River, and the fossil sample of the Shansisuchus (meaning “Shansi Province crocodile”) excavated from the Hukou riverbed of the Yellow River. Therefore, it is praised as “The Miniature of the Yellow River” and “An Encyclopedia of the Yellow River”.
