A national museum and a new landmark of yellow river culture

A flagship project to tell Yellow River stories...

Since the news of construction came out,

the Yellow River National Museum has been put on many “halos”

Now,

what’s the progress of the project?

How does it look?

What will be displayed?

May 18 is International Museum Day.

Our reporter came to the project site of the Yellow River National Museum

to learn about its latest progress.

Invested about 1.93 billion yuan, covering an area of 135 mu

As early as February 2020, the Yellow River Conservancy Commission of the Ministry of Water Resources established a working mechanism with Zhengzhou City, and set up a special class to promote the construction of the Yellow River National Museum. At the same time, the Outline of the Construction Plan of the Yellow River National Museum (Draft) was compiled. For a time, the construction of the Yellow River National Museum became a hot topic.

On May 18, at the southeast corner of the intersection of Yellow River Levee Road and Wenhua Road, the reporter saw a large space covered with a dust gauze, which is the location of the Yellow River National Museum. According to the site staff, the construction area of the project is about 100,000 square meters, and the investment is estimated to be about 1.93 billion yuan. The project covers a total area of about 135 mu (equivalent to the size of Zhengzhou Lvcheng Square).

It is shaped like the Yellow River (“”)

The reporter learned from the construction side that the building scheme for the Yellow River National Museum was designed by German GMP.

According to the scheme, the main body of the building is like a huge rock, “fostered” from the embankment and mountains. The streamlined appearance is integrated with the natural landscape. The polygonal building gently fluctuates and bridges a winding stream in the park. The overall shape is inspired by the “几” shape of the Yellow River, which is in harmony with the surroundings.

The building stands 40m above the ground, with one floor underground and four floors aboveground. Divided by functions, the north part is an exhibition area and the south part is a service education area, with archives, library and other supporting facilities. The exhibition space of totally 40,000 square meters will fully reveal the history, culture and ecological features of the Yellow River through four theme exhibition subareas. In addition, there are a wealth of temporary exhibition and interactive experience areas.

The roof design of the Yellow River National Museum is also very ingenious. The afforested roof continues the natural scenery of the national park. Here, visitors can have an extraordinary view-- overlooking the magnificent Yellow River to the north or the beautiful skyline of Zhengzhou city to the south. “The roof is densely vegetated, and visitors will be allowed to rest or have a bird’s-eye view. Glass is applied in many places on the roof to let in sunlight, which is energy efficient and environmentally friendly,” said a staff member of the construction side. The building interior continues the external design and material concept.

The overhanging structure of the main body of the building spans the landscape waterfront, and the main entrance of visitors is located below it. The exterior walls of twists and turns make the impression of washing. The metal ceiling accompanies the main tour route to visually guide visitors forward.

Notably, the Yellow River National Museum is displayed in the way of “point”. Historical and cultural exhibition areas with different themes such as the Yellow River Museum Area and the Huayuankou Site Area form a “planar” landscape with the Yellow River Beach Ecopark and the Suoxu River Site Park, so as to show the overall style and historical pattern of Yellow River culture. A variety of tour routes will connect the “point” landscape and the “planar” landscape to comprehensively reveal the connotation of Yellow River culture.

Construction scheduled to start at the end of this June

When it comes to the positioning of the Yellow River National Museum, the construction side revealed that the positioning of the project involves three aspects: an inheritance base for carrying forward Yellow River culture, a display platform for the ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin, and a platform for exchanges and mutual learning among river civilizations in the world.

After completion, the Yellow River National Museum will become an inheritance base for carrying forward Yellow River culture, a display platform for serving the ecological protection and high-quality development strategy of the Yellow River Basin, and an important venue for exchanges and mutual learning among river civilizations in the world.

The Yellow River National Museum will become a national museum that concentrates the essence of Yellow River civilization, reveals the natural changes of the Yellow River, demonstrates people’s great achievements in governing the Yellow River, and manifests the cultural confidence of the Chinese nation.

As is learned, the design bidding for the project was started in July 2020, and five top domestic and foreign design teams were invited to participate. Eventually, the design scheme of German GMP stood out.

The project feasibility study report was approved on March 31, 2021. At present, the procedures before construction are being gone through simultaneously, and the project is due to start construction at the end of June 2021.
