During the archaeological excavation of the North Gate of East Zheng Han Gucheng, Xinzheng, Henan, archaeologists first found that the gate and small town outside the city gate play a significant role in researching the early urban defense system in China.

According to the reports from Henan Province Cultural Relics Bureau yesterday, recently the State Administration of Cultural Heritage has announced the list of the third batch of the National Archaeological Site Park, Zheng Han Gucheng included. Thus the number of the National Archaeological Site Park in Henan has risen to four.

It was known that according to on-site investigation and discussion of experts, 12 archaeological site parks had been included into the list, which are Yuanzhongdu National Archaeological Park in Hebei, Shanglin Lake Yue Kiln National Archaeological Park in Zhejiang, Dayao Longquan Kiln National Archaeological Park, Ming Dynasty Empire City National Archaeological Park in Anhui, Chengziya National Archaeological Park in Shandong, Jizhou Kiln National Archaeological Park in Jiangxi, Zheng Han Gucheng Archaeological Park in Henan, Panlongcheng National Archaeological Park in Hubei, Chengtoushan National Archaeological Park in Hunan, Han Chang’an City Weiyang Palace National Archaeological Park in Shaanxi, and West Xia Ling National Archaeological Park in Ningxia.

The National Archaeological Park refers to the specific public space that gives priority to the major archaeological site and its background, with functions of scientific research, education and recreation, and plays a national demonstration role in the archaeological site protection and exhibition. In 2010, 2013 and 2017, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage successively conducted the evaluation of three batches of the National Archaeological Park, and currently, there are 36 parks in 20 provinces (districts and cities) being awarded as the National Archaeological Park. Anyang Yin Ruins, Luoyang City Site of Sui and Tang Dynasty, Luoyang Han Wei Gucheng, and Zheng Han Gucheng in Henan were included in succession.

Zheng Han Gucheng was the capital site of Zheng and Han during the Spring and Autumn period and the Warring States period. Located in the urban area of Xinzheng, it covers an area of 16 square kilometers, which is also one of the best-preserved and the most complicated ancient city walls among the contemporaries in the world. Early in 1961, Zheng Han Gucheng was listed as the first batch of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level, and was selected as one of the “top 100 archaeological discoveries of China in 20th century” in 2001. In 2005, it was listed as one of the first batch of 36 large-scale sites under national special protection, and in 2006, it was included into one of key cultural relics protection projects for 100 large-scale relics sites by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage.

It was reported that the project approval list of the third batch of the National Archaeological Park has also been announced at the same time, including 32 archaeological parks, four of which are in Henan—Anyang Yin Ruins, Luoyang City Site of Sui and Tang Dynasty, Luoyang Han Wei Gucheng, and Zheng Han Gucheng. So far, 69 parks in 24 provinces (districts and cities) have been included into the project approval list of the National Archaeological Park.
