The 2018 China “Root-Seeking Summer Camp for Overseas Chinese Youth Opens in Scenic Area of Yellow Emperor’s Hometown in Xinzheng

On the morning of July 10, the opening ceremony of the 2018 China “Root-Seeking” Summer Camp—Henan for overseas Chinese youth was held in Yellow Emperor’s Hometown in Xinzheng. 225 Chinese youth campers and 18 Macao students came to Henan to experience the essence and the charm of the Yellow Emperor culture and Central Plain culture. Wang Ziwen, Deputy Director of Foreign Affairs Office of the People’s Government of Henan Province, and Zhang Jianguo, Vice Chairman of Zhengzhou Municipal Committee of CPPCC, attended the opening ceremony.

The opening ceremony began at 10:50. First is the flag-giving ceremony. Then, campers took off their hats, made themselves clean and completed ancestor worship activities including presenting flower baskets, incensing, worshiping and singing the ode to the Yellow Emperor in line.

It is reported that the China “Root-Seeking” Summer Camp is a large-scale comprehensive activity organized by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council and the China Overseas Exchange Association to enhance overseas Chinese youth’s understanding of their motherland, raise their interest in learning Chinese and Chinese culture, and promote the development of overseas Chinese education.

Since 2006, Henan has successfully hosted such theme camps as Henan Kungfu Camp, Henan Cultural Camp, Gathering in the Central Plain,—Root-Seeking Winter Camp, and Root-Seeking Spring Camp, all of which are very popular among overseas Chinese communities and associations, Chinese schools, Chinese youths and their parents.

The campers this year came from 14 Chinese schools and associations in nine countries that were the United States, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Hungary, Germany, France, Italy, Czech Republic and Spain. Most of them came to Henan for the first time.

The summer camp aims at helping campers experience Chinese culture, learn Chinese culture, and inherit Chinese culture with local characteristics of Henan. Through a variety of colorful activities, campers can not only learn Shaolin martial arts, Chinese talent and skills, but also visit such world cultural heritages as Henan Museum, Shaolin Temple in Dengfeng and Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, and participate in social practice activities.
